Chapter Six

Victor did not know exactly who the other two were, but he recognized Claude well enough, and that was ample reason for him to grab onto Jay and yank the smaller male behind him.

All three of them looked at Victor. Claude smiled, some smug, horrible thing that made Victor want to slice through his other wing.

The blond male, a man with a round face, who seemed older than the rest, crossed his arms, seeming irritated.

The male with the red hair had to be Ian. Vince had described his former employer well enough that there was no mistaking it.

He eyed Victor with a barely contained disgust, laced with curiosity.

“This is not the woodsman who stole my mate,” said Ian.

Claude frowned, and he looked at Victor as though insulted by not being the right person.

“He looks exactly how you described him!”

Ian rolled his eyes. “Yes, because blond-haired dragons with beards and furs are a rarity.”

Victor was not sticking around for this. “Stay behind me, Jay. We’re going back home.”

Realizing he was still holding the bag of chocolates, the very thing Jay had come here for, Victor reached back, blindly handing it to the man.

Jay took it, saying nothing, but Victor could taste his fear in the air.

Ian stepped forward, a casual, fake smile on his face, as though they were about to discuss business or the weather.

“That human belongs to me, sir,” he said.

No other dragon referred to Victor as sir. Ian was being full of shit from the get-go.

“I was under the impression this human was staying with the dragon family up the hill.”

The little muscle beneath Ian’s eye twitched.

“Yes, well, something of a mix-up. He carries my bite.”

Shit. Victor immediately unclenched his fists.

He’d known. There had been no secret made of it. Jay might be with Theodore for…legally ambiguous reasons, but he still carried Ian’s mark.

Meaning he would feel Ian’s pain should Victor take a swing at him.

He could not fight them, but that did not mean he had to give Jay up.

“Are you going to hand him over, or aren’t you?” Ian narrowed his eyes.

Claude looked very much as though he hoped Victor would refuse.

“I’m sorry, you will have to take it up with Theodore. I do not get in the middle of disputes involving humans.”

“For the love of…” Ian blew out a heavy breath. “Jay, get over here, right now.”

Victor chanced a glance back at the smaller man.

Jay trembled. His whole body seemed to vibrate as though he had no control over himself.

His fear stinking up the air outside, indicating how potent it was.

“I said, now,” Ian said.

Jay’s bottom lip trembled. He refused to look at Ian, and he shook his head. “N-no,” he moaned. “No, please.”

“He is not leaving with you. You want him, then deal with your debts to Theodore.”

“I owe Theodore no debts. He stole from me.”

Victor shrugged. “Not my problem.”

“He belongs to me!”

“Not according to him, and apparently Theodore’s lawyers, or his son.” Victor clenched his hands into fists. “I heard you tried to claim the child as your own.
